Sound Metrics launched their new ARIS Defender 3000 diver-held imaging sonar. The ARIS Defender is the next generation of the DIDSON Diver Held sonar and affords their customers autonomous operation with a battery endurance of four hours and an internal data storage capability for up to 16 hours of image recording. The ARIS Defender 3000 is the first ever “convertible” diver held sonar system. This will enable their customers to use the sonar in multiple deployment scenarios by removing the handle and battery sections. Likewise, existing customers of ARIS Explorer 3000 will now have the option to purchase a “conversion kit” if they wish to convert their sonar to an ARIS Defender 3000.

Their stand featured a water tank for demonstrations of the ARIS Defender 3000 (hand held), and the ARIS Explorer 3000 with the AR3 Rotator for remote control of pan/tilt/roll.

The ARIS Defender 3000 operating frequencies are identical to those used in the ARIS Explorer 3000 imaging sonar. This makes it the only commercially available sonar to provide ultra-high-resolution multi-beam imagery. In addition, the ARIS Defender 3000 is the first ever multi-beam imaging sonar offered in the market place as a convertible sonar. Basically, its two sonars in one! It is easy for a diver to learn and operate as a Defender, yet extremely flexible when used in the Explorer configuration.

This featured exhibit was used by/of use to anyone requiring visual information in dark and/or turbid water – as an aid in underwater construction, inspection and monitoring, fisheries research and management, for evidence/body identification and recovery by law enforcement, for mine/IED clearance on ship hulls and berthing areas, and for enhancing safety during dive operations.

Other exhibits included: the ARIS Explorer 1800, ARIS Explorer 1200 and DIDSON-DH multibeam imaging sonars, and the AR2/AR3 Rotators.

Their exhibits tied in with the following conference streams: Aquaculture; Marine Renewables; Monitoring Structural Integrity: Understanding Risk and Reliability; Oil & Gas: What’s next for Ageing Offshore Assets?; and Unmanned Vehicles and Vessels Showcase.

Over the past 12 years, the DIDSON and ARIS lines of multibeam imaging sonars from Sound Metrics have become the world standard in high-resolution underwater visualisation, with continually expanding areas of application. www.soundmetrics.com
