Renishaw plc designs and manufactures world-class laser systems and sensors for high-performance mapping, surveying, positioning and measuring in extreme environments. New at Oceanology this year is Renishaw’s latest mapping product, Merlin. This vessel-based LiDAR system gives hydrographic surveyors access to advanced laser surveying technology at low cost.

Merlin is engineered specifically to integrate with your vessel's existing hydrographic surveying equipment. It enables you to synchronise Merlin's above-water LiDAR data with your existing below-water sensors to simultaneously produce an accurate dataset of the environment above and below the waterline.

Merlin was on display at stand K500 where visitors received a full overview of system functionality and applications from our Merlin team. Merlin is an affordable marine-grade LiDAR scanner that integrates with the high-cost positioning equipment already on board a survey vessel. Merlin's universal interface, compatible with major hydrographic data acquisition software packages, ensures operator familiarity and ease of use so there’s no need for costly specialist training.

Renishaw has worked closely with the world’s leading hydrographic software companies to integrate Merlin into their workflow.

As a result Merlin is fully operational with the following major industry-standard software packages:
• HYSWEEP® multi-beam collection and editing software from HYPACK®. Fully operational in the HYSWEEP_15.0.18 version of HYPACK® 15.
• NaviScan and Kuda sonar and laser data acquisition software from EIVA.
• QINSy (Quality Integrated Navigation System) hydrographic data acquisition software from QPS.
• Teledyne PDS software for hydrographic survey and dredging operations (version and newer). Merlin provides hydrographic surveyors and survey vessel operators with cost-effective access to the advanced surveying technology required for capturing full 360° point clouds. Time-tagged to precisely synchronise with your existing bathymetric equipment, Merlin data can be used to produce a complete map of the marine environment above and below the waterline. This speeds up project timescales, enabling surveyors to carry out full data collection in a single pass.

Renishaw also showcased the Fanbeam 5 laser-based DP position reference sensor for offshore operations. Fanbeam has led the market for over 20 years due to its durability, high-performance in tough conditions, and ease of use for dynamic positioning operators (DPOs). DPOs chose Fanbeam for peace of mind in the field.
