BMT Group

BMT Group - The main theme for BMT stand was: “forecast, measure, analyse” – an integrated approach to better understanding the operational complexities within the marine environment. BMT has the in depth knowledge and expertise to provide the following services that align with the theme above:

• Forecast: improving the accuracy of forecasts and the metocean and structural information that input into the design of marine developments. This can result in a significant cost reduction in the design and operation of marine projects and is particularly relevant in today’s market of low energy prices for both conventional hydrocarbon and renewable energy markets.
• Measure: information, particularly data related to the measurements of structural response and ocean modelling, result in large data sets. The management, visualisation and interpretation of these data sets require a different mode of operation “big data”. BMT is developing data management and visualisation software to enable the handling of large data sets in an efficient manner.
• Analyse: increasing the life of a field development requires effective monitoring of the asset. BMT can provide real-time systems to monitor the structural response of the asset simultaneously with the environmental conditions. Analysis of the resultant data set may be used to review the operability and design criteria limits. BMT will also be presenting during the conference and the papers will feature on their stand:
• ‘Challenges of Managing and Verifying Large Data Sets Generated by Ocean Modelling in West Africa to Support Commercial Applications (to be presented by Robin Stephens, Metocean Group Manager at BMT ARGOSS, a subsidiary of BMT Group. To be presented in the South Gallery, Room 7&8 on the 16th March between 13:30-16:30.
• ‘Marine and Structural Integrity Monitoring for a typical FPSO’: to be presented by Robert Barker, Regional Sales Manager – North America at BMT Scientific Marine Services, a subsidiary of BMT Group. To be presented in the South Gallery, Room 5 on the 16th March between 10:00-13:00hrs. Tom Johnson, President of BMT Scientific Marine Services will be chairing the session.

They had two examples of their integrated approach to better understanding the complexities within the marine environment.

Providing forecast, metocean information with the structural response of the asset and analysing the results in a holistic manner provides a level of complexity that allows for a greater understanding of the assets fatigue life and can result in cost reductions in both the operation of the asset and any future engineering design for new infrastructure in the region.

Working collaboratively with industry leaders, Oceanweather International and The Met Office, with input from oil and gas operators has benefited operators and contractors working in the Southern Atlantic, enabled them to have a greater understanding of the challenges and complexities of working with large hindcast current models.

Their exhibits were of use to conventional hydrocarbon and renewable energy operators, engineering companies and marine contractors

Their exhibits were interested in attending the Handling Big Data; Marine Renewables; Monitoring Structural Integrity: Understanding Risk and Reliability; Ocean Observing Systems: Marine Technology and Services Sector Role in the Blue Economy; and Oil & Gas: What’s next for Ageing Offshore Assets? conference sessions.

As part of its commitment to deliver enhanced services to its clients and improved efficiencies across the business, BMT Group (BMT), the leading international design, engineering and risk management consultancy, has announced an internal reorganisation which will see the existing BMT operating companies grouped into five market focused partnerships.

These partnerships will be headed by new leaders who will come into post over the next three months. BMT have recently appointed Jan van Smirren who will lead the Energy Partnership. Jan most recently held the position of Metocean Global Business Line Manager and prior to this was Managing Director of Fugro GEOS in the Americas. Mr van Smirren will be attending OI 2016.
